A trip around the recommended Mat style route

Two girls have been letting them experience one of the ecotourisms, the town guide!

Town guide

The guide was Matt from Kamijima Tours. He is also in charge of the experience of this Setouchi Kamijima trip.

If you hear that you are a foreigner’s guide and you can’t speak English, you can’t communicate?? You became anxious. Please be assured. Matt from New Zealand has moved to Kamijima for two years. We will go around the recommended mat-style route that thoroughly investigated Kamijima Town from a foreigner’s perspective!!!

Proposals tailored to physical strength and experience

First, weaccept at the Yuge Seastation “Flat” and have a meeting. It will suggest a cycling route that suits our cycling experience and bike.

Once you have decided on a route, move to the Setouchi Koryukan and rent a bicycle. At Kamijima Town rental cycle, in addition to cross bikes and city cycles, bicycles with electric assist are also available, so please choose according to your own leg strength. There are also child seats for kids bicycles with electric assist, so family cycling is also recommended!

This time, I will run a route with intense ups and downs, so I chose the sports type electrically assisted bicycle “E-Bike”. Even beginners can rest assured that the mat will give a lecture on how to use the E-Bike and settings such as adjusting the height of the saddle!

Prepare a drink for water supply and leave!

A safe cycling route for beginners and children

First, we will go around Yuge Island!

Follow the low shoreline of the embankment behind the mat. The bridge connecting the islands, the blue sky and the sea. Just the right speed to run while looking at the open Yumeshima Kaido.

Of course, it also confirms safety, but Kamijima is a compact town with zero traffic lights and zero tunnels. In the first place, there is little traffic, and beginners and people with children can run with peace of mind, so it is a recommended town for cycling.

After cycling to the Kamiyuge area, go to the island alley exploration.

I arrived at the hideaway cafe “Kitchen 313 Kamiyuge”, which was a renovation of a 100-year-old folk house. The owner, Maki, and her pet, Koko-chan, welcomed us!

Hand-made chewy bagels made from domestic wheat and home-roasted coffee are popular. All the different types of bagels are delicious and I buy a lot every time I come …

moment to chat with Maki-san and play with the friendly Koko-chan … happy.

Restart when you are satisfied!

I will go north on the coastline again. The color of the sea is beautiful!

Arrived at Takahama Hachiman Shrine. Go through the torii gate and head to the approach to the large pine trees. I will get off the bicycle.

The best thing about this shrine is the scenery.

On this day, I encountered a scene where a big ferry slowly came out from the Innoshima shipyard on the opposite bank! It seems that they are pulled by a small tugboat and taken to a wide sea area.

Exit Takahama Hachiman Shrine and continue north.

I arrived at the northern end of Yuge Island, where a large flower blooming in the sea. This is the art “Sora no Hana” drawn on the breakwater. The bright rainbow-colored flowers in the blue of the sea and sky are photogenic!

here, go to the road around Yuge Island. We will continue on a road with intense ups and downs.

It’s a tough slope! However, with E-Bike, even those of us who don’t usually ride a bicycle can easily climb it.

It is a superb view spot with a 180 degree panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea!

After finishing the round of Yuge, when I was hungry, I went to “Sushi Izakaya Totoya”. The general is a restaurant that trained in Kyoto and is crowded with local drinking parties and banquets at night. Popular menus are nigiri sushi and mackerel sushi. At lunchtime, we mainly serve fried chicken set meals and cutlet curry. For girls, I’m glad that there are refreshing udon noodles such as kitsune udon and umeboshi udon!

lunch, cross the Yuge Bridge To Sashima.

I stopped by at Sashima Hachiman Shrine. The steep stairs on the approach to the village are the landmarks. At the annual autumn festival, people carry portable shrines and danjiri and go up and down the stairs.

Go around Sashima and then to Ikina Island.

Run through the scenic coastline while chatting with Matt.

The last thing I visited was the breakwater art “Minna no Whale” at Sound Hamada Campsite. Adventure together on a whale that swims leisurely in the sea! It’s a perfect spot for Instagram!

Finally, return to Yuge Island and finish at Setouchi Koryukan! Cycling with a total length of about 25km while feeling the sea nearby. I sweated a lot!

This time, the main activity was Yumeshima Kaido Cycling, but they will take you to the recommended spots on the mat according to the wishes of the participants.

The town guide is usually conducted mainly by foreigners, but of course Japanese people can also participate! Why don’t you travel to the island while chatting with Matt?
